It's a crying shame that it isn't viable to deliver pizza via trebuchet.

Yeah, the only place near us that does their own deliveries is a really popular pizza chain.  Everyone else is on an app that organises deliveries for them.  Which means that deliveries take an age and regularly go via multiple locations on the way.

In addition to the above, anyone who wants to work as a delivery driver already is -- the gig economy ate those workers.

I think the self-inflicted killing of DoorDash (and GrubHub) is well underway. Locally there seem to be a bunch of Johnny-come-latelies to the space that are bending over to be more attractive to businesses. I'd expect, though, any of them that are national are probably already active in SF so I won't name them.

Additionally I've noticed for takeout (but not delivery) Square has started offering online ordering, which already seems to be the favorite of any business using that for POS. Doesn't help with delivery, of course.

I just did a quick look around at some restaurant suppliers and came up with over $5/pizza in just ingredients for a cheese pizza. Then add all the costs to keep a commercial kitchen open, pay the staff, etc. Then look at what you have to pay someone to drive it around. With gas, etc it's going to eat most of your margin, especially on a slow night where that delivery guy is sitting still for long stretches.
